This side of my classroom is where my students and I spend time doing much of our group work. |
Developing extraordinary is what I am striving to do in both my personal life and as an educator of special education students. I believe we all have the desire to make ourselves better both personally and through our work. I hope to share my thoughts and others on ways to develop extraordinary within ourselves and those around us every day.

The Start of Something Extraordinary
I am starting this blog with the hopes of sharing, documenting, and learning from others through my career in education. I currently teach special education for students in third and fourth grade and love it!
Much of my instruction focuses on using appropriate behaviors and social skills. Because of that, I spend a significant amount of time structuring my classroom environment and student schedules/work-time to avoid behavioral problems. I also work to adapt and modify curriculum both in my special education classroom and the general education classroom to meet the needs of my students. I anticipate that I will post much about my students' routines and behavior plans but also the adapting and modifying work I do for my students' academic success.

I love the style and formatting of your blog. It's very clean and polished looking, which makes me want to explore your blog more! Great job with the design. Also, I like that your first post clearly identifies your role as a teacher and describes the type of content that will typically be included on your blog. Nice job!
This is an amazing blog! Way to go. I really like how you added pictures to go along with your posts. The pictures clearly go right along with your posts, and it's helpful to have an image linked directly to your posts. I think your blog as a whole is clear, descriptive, and formatted nicely. I really like how you added a link to your Pinterest page as well as your school website. I would think this could be a useful website for your students' parents to bookmark so they can easily see what their child is up to, or get a hold of you quickly if a question or concern would arise. Awesome job!
Thank you both! I definitely wanted to create something functional and worthwhile.
Hi Sarah,
I think your blog is really helpful, especially being a special education myself. Although I teach at the middle school level, and specifically 8th grade students, I can still find connections with the ideas you posted! I love your money system as incentive for your students to do well, especially with bringing homework back to school! Just curious, is it for assignments they have with you? Or is for turning in assignments for other classes? I have never even thought of having a reward system specifically for bringing back homework, but I think that's a great idea!! I'd have to get a little creative with monitoring my students homework, especially since they are in classes with various teachers... but seeing blogs like yours definitely helps me think things out. I have a reward system similar in my class, where the students have tickets (4 for 4 days worth of home base class periods throughout the week) and they start out with 4. If for any reason they are not following the expectations of homebase class,(which is to be working on assignments, checking grades, or reading quietly, basically doing what they need to do to be successful,) then they lose a ticket. Once a ticket is lost for the week, they cannot earn a prize from my reward drawer (which is full of gum, jolly ranchers, pencils...things like that). I also have a pebble jar where if the entire group is doing what they need to do for homebase class, then I put 3 pebbles in the jar-once jar is filled, we vote on how they'd like to celebrate (pizza party, movie day, etc.) Anyways, you have a great start to your site- I'll definitely visit again as you continue to update! :) Thanks, Kenzie
Thanks Mackenzie! My students really only get homework from me, so the reward is based on my assignments. I had not considered using the reward for homework outside of my class, but I like the idea! I do have some students who do not get all of their homework from me, so maybe that is something I can consider in the future if turning homework in is a problem. I like your other reward ideas as well! Thanks for sharing!
